You can of course take a soil sample and have it tested by a professional laboratory. You will then receive an extensive report about the soil, which you can tailor your plant choice to. In most cases, however, such an expensive soil analysis is not necessary.
One of the most important properties to look out for is the acidity (indicated by pH value). You can measure the pH value of your soil with a pH meter.
Ideal is a pH value of 5.5-6.5. This acidity offers the best fertility. Does your soil have a different acidity? Then it is good to choose an acid-loving plant (pH < 5.5) or calcareous perennial (pH > 6.5), such as the boxwood.
